A word counter does more than tally words — it helps you hit length targets for essays, meta descriptions, tweets and articles, and gives you a feel for how long a piece takes to read. This tool updates every count live as you type or paste.
How to use the word counter
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Watch the live word, character, sentence and paragraph counts.
- Check the estimated reading and speaking time.

Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
We divide the word count by an average reading speed of about 200–230 words per minute, which suits most general audiences.
Does it count characters with spaces?
It shows both: characters including spaces and characters excluding spaces, since different platforms count differently.
Is my text stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved.
